Envelope by Celine Aagaard

Where did your fascination for fashion start?

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been fascinated by beauty, ‘pretty things’ and dressing up. I found out fashion was a way to express myself early on, even though my peers in the village I grew up in didn’t understand my sartorial choices. When I was 13 I wrote in my journal I wanted to work at Vogue when I grew up, but Teen Vogue would be ok too, haha!

How did you get into the business?

Because of my love for languages, I have a background in Spanish Linguistics and even lived in Spain for a bit. But I missed fashion and design too much. So I started a Master in Design History, Theory and Criticism, worked in an art gallery in Amsterdam for a bit and finally ended up at Vogue.

What was the first thing you got to do in Vogue?

Before I ‘went digital’ I was actually the assistant to the Editor in Chief here at Vogue. It was a great opportunity for me to get to know the magazine buttom-up, and establish a relationship with Karin - the editor in chief. After a year the opportunity arrose for me to work as a digital editor, and I seized it! I didn’t have much experience in the online world before, but I’m a real Google analytics nerd now.

Tell us about a normal day at Vogue

Because Vogue.nl is a fashion news website, we start pretty early. I wake up around 6:30, check Instagram and other social media channels for breaking news. I’m usually at the office around 08:00 o’clock and start selecting the news we want to post that morning. I send my selections to the interns, who start writing. I spend the morning editing their texts, re-writing articles, selecting images and producing social media posts to go with the news. We’re always looking for breaking news and fashion related topics that have the potential to ‘go viral’. In the afternoon I usually have more time for creating concepts, making articles of my own, meetings, working on pages for print, going to press events, meeting with PR, etc.

Since you work as a digital editor, how many hours a day are you online? Oof, that’s a dangerous question! If I’m completely honest, during the week I’m basically online from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep. I NEVER shut my phone down. Come to think of it maybe I should do that more often, haha! In the weekends I try to unplug, but things like social media and especially Instagram keep on going, and they’re also a lot of fun.

Who do you follow on instagram?

Basically all the big designers, fashion houses, models. The @NLVogue Instagram we curate on a daily basis, but my own Instagram account I really use as a social platform to see what my friends and colleagues are doing, and I post random photo’s of me and my life. As you’ll see, I don’t have the curated, beautiful feed, but more an ecclectic mix of silly pictures with sarcastic captions.

What podcasts do you recommend?

I love Lena Dunhams podcast ‘Women of the Hour’, but the one I listen to most is NYMag’s ‘Sex Lives’, a podcast narrated by David Wallace Wells about, yes, sex. It’s hilarious at times, but also informative and thought through, going from mainstream topics to more taboo subjects, always with experts and NYMag’s sex columnist Maureen O`Connor.

What webpages do you visit?

Because of my profession I visit a lot of fashion news websites. WWD.com, fashionista.com, Vogue.com (US site), NYMag’s The Cut.

Your highlights in your carreer?

The travel opportunities that I get because of my job are a true gift. But also small victories like writing an article and seeying it go viral and people responding to it makes my day.

What inspires you?

Small things, seeying someone on the street in a fabulous outfit, talking to one of my sisters about their latest go to beauty item, having a day off and spending it reading my favourite magazines and finding so much inspiration I feel like I should write something that exact minute.

What is style for you?

Style for me is a way to express myself. If I feel down or somber I go for a grungy look with a lot of leather and black (my go-to colour), if I feel sexy I’ll opt for a more feminine look. Which come to think of it is not very often, haha! I feel sexiest in a good pair of jeans, my cowboy boots and a relaxed shirt. I don’t wear a lot of make-up, but my hair always has to look good, that’s my only rule!

Whats your secret to always be so unique?

I don’t know really, but I feel like style is something that comes from within. Thru the years I’ve really discovered my own style, which is a lot about feeling comfortable yet sexy in my clothes, being able to go anywhere any time. I love women who can dress up in high heels, skirts and dresses everyday, but I’m just not one of them.

What is a keeper in you wardrobe?

My black leather cowboy boots are a definite keeper. They’re not even designer, I bought them on sale at Zara, but I wear them with every kind of outfit. They make me feel tough, yet cool. Also, my jeans from Acne I wear around the clock, my Levi’s 501 and more recently a leather biker jacket I picked up at a shoot we did for Vogue.nl. The stylist got it at a vintage store in Amsterdam, and when I saw it I had to have it. I wear it with everything, and feel odly American in it.

Where do you get your daily style inspiration?

Basically in the morning I just throw on whatever is in my closet that I feel good in. I also love the model-off- duty looks by models such as Frederikke Sofie and Vera van Erp. And my colleague and Vogue stylist Marije Goekoop is simply the most stylish woman on this planet. Whenever I see her at the office I get inspired by her beautifully put together outfits.

What keyitems do you go for this season?

In summer I like to go simple and, of course, black. Flowy, black flared pants that also work when the temperatures rise (Acne Studios has a great pair this season) simple and sleek tops with spaghetti straps, lingery-like dresses.

What’s the next big thing?

Call it the ‘Vetements’ effect, but oversized jumpers, over-the- knee boots and big coats are going to stick around for a while. Gucci’s been a big influencer the past few seasons when it comes to streetstyle, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. For me personally I’d like to purchase everything from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsens latest The Row collection, preferably in their newest New York flagship store/townhouse.

Dress up or dress down?

For work I often have dinners of parties where I dress up a bit. So I simply love dressing down in the weekends, in my favourite old shirts, worn in jeans and leather jackets. I could seriously LIVE in biker jackets.

Vintage or new buys?

Both. I love vintage finds because they’re unique, and they become your own as if the item never had a previous owner. But honestly I sometimes can’t handle the clutter in a lot of vintage stores. And new buys are just so crisp and fresh, I love that feeling too.

Skinny jeans or boyfriends?

Difficult. If I had to choose, I’d go for the skinny because paired with boots, a band t-shirt and a biker jacket you get that instant rocker / off-duty look.

What trends do you believe in?

I don’t really believe in trends, I believe in personal and effortless style. Because I love a bit of everything - feminine but also grungy, I’m never ‘full on’ on one trend in particular.

Any forecast for 2016?

I think the whole romance trend will continue, and in general I think people are putting more energy and focus into ‘accessorizing’ their outfits, which we also saw on the runway at Gucci and Prada - the corsets!
