Meet the Street Style Photographers - part 2
She lives in Paris, shoot for british Vogue, but when it comes to style she is fascinated about the Scandinavians. Envelope met the talented photographer Maria-Paola Bertrand Hillion during Copehagen Fashion Week and asked her- How to dress to get the photographers attention.
Name: Marie-Paola Bertrand-Hillion
Camera: 5D Mark III
Webpage: blog: www.mademoiselle-marie.fr
pro site: www.mpbh.fr
Clients: Abaca photo press agency for all fashion weeks. But as freelance I have a turnover of clients.
Where are you based? Paris
What do you look for in a good picture: Style and outfit of the person, natural pose, clear background.
Favorite People to photograph right now? Bloggers for different reasons. The outfits are great, the communications is easy with them, they are always pleased to accept a picture and they are patient with our requests, walking, walking again, looking back, looking down etc.
It was your first time in Copenhagen and then now Stockholm for fashion week- in what way do you think Scandinavia is interesting? Copenhagen and Stockholm Fashion Week is smaller from the other ones I usually go to, like Paris, Milan and London. We don't have to run around like crazy, first because there are less guests going to the shows and second because we are maybe 10-15 photographers, and everybody can work without being in the way of one other. People attending the shows are less stressed.
Do scandinavians dress different? Yes! I think Scandinavian people think "global style" rather than matching expensive and crazy brands together. I love beautiful minimalist outfits.
Any tip for an unknown person to get the photographers attention during fashion week? I took pictures in Copenhagen of unknown girls because they were beautiful, natural, and their outfits were nice; They were not too much. I think we are just looking for authentic people that don't dress up for fashion week.
When did you start to shoot fashion? I started my street style blog in 2010 as a hobby, and I became professional 2 years ago at the end of my business studies. I didn't find a job in the field I wanted so I decided to make a living from my passion and It was the best decision of my life.
What is style for you? People saying they don't care about fashion and style are liars. Everybody on earth has to care because we all have to put clothes on everyday. The way you dress is usually reflecting your personality. When I went to India 3 years ago, I was impressed by the beautiful ladies living in slums. Poor, but looking great and respectable with a saree on. At this moment, I realized that fashion and style were universal and not only in the fashion week industry, nor only in rich countries.
During Copenhagen Fashion Week youre pictures were published at Vogue.uk Actually I shot for my press agency that sells the pictures to different media. British Vogue was one of them this time and I usually see my pics in different big media.
Whats your highlight in your carrer? The most difficult part is finding clients with budget between fashion weeks. I work for brands in Paris and I really enjoy it, but I feel like I need to do more documenting work. I am planning a world tour for next year to photograph real people everywhere. I want to meet the real world, take pics of everything I see. In fact, I want to help, thanks to my pics, for a better world.
