Malaikaraiss FW16

WHO: Malaika Raiss

WHAT: Malaikaraiss FW16, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

WHERE: Me collectors Room, Berlin

Oversized layering, graphic cuts and an endless fascination for Scandinavia. The German designer Malaika Raiss convinced us on how to layer a wide variety of fabrics for Autumn /Winter in dusty pink, black & white.

A yearning for freedom – the designer Malaika Raiss found her inspiration for “Second Nature” in the raw beauty of the Scandinavian countryside and the minimalist and simultaneously detail-obsessed architecture of Alvar Aalto. The designs play with organic nature-inspired elements as well as constructed shapes, transformed into graphic cuts and silhouettes.

Designer Malaika Raiss knows how to layer. This season she is layering a wide variety of materials over each other, cutting, and sewing together again, thereby creating the impression of multidimensional complexity. The collection plays with lightly bell-shaped, softly draped A-lines,  not only in dresses and skirts but also in tops and blazers. Overlong sleeves and ruffles, figure hugging cuts as well as expansive volumes result in fascinating contrasts, the use of a wide variety of materials results in a rich multi-layered effect. Heavy woollen fabrics, light silk crepes, shimmering organza, soft leather as well as techie fabrics borrowed from outdoor wear, emphasise these divergences, taking the new collection to a whole new level of mutability.

In what way are you inspired by Scandinavia, and do you ever visist any of the Nordic countries?

-I am spending my summer always in Finland, and I use the time there to work on my collection and getting inspiration. I love how important nature is for the Scandinavian people, how it´s integrated in their architecture, design and cities. The easiness, straightness and how important design and fashion is in Scandinavia admires me a lot. And the people fascinate me in their hearty, calm and true way.

I what way does living in Berlin inspires you? Berlin is always in motion and is constantly developing and so I get always new ideas. It´s like a big mood board, says Malaika Raiss to Envelope.
