Envelope visits inspiring people at their office and at home. In Copenhagen we visited danish jewellery designer Charlotte Lynggaard, creative Director at Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen.
Charlotte Lyngaard whats in your place? I have always been inspired by nature. It´s the place I feel most comfortable. Whether it´s the sea or the forest, I find a lot of strength when connecting with nature. I love feeling unified with the nature. Denmark has quite an extraordinaire nature that both inspire me on a personal and professional level. Long quite walks, alone or with my family, is one of the things I love the most, it helps me find my inner peace and relaxation.
Where else do you find inspiration? Another major source of inspiration is the many contrasts in life – like the Scandinavian nature combined with inspiration from the strict Japanese style. Whether it comes in the form of furnishings, clothing or here in my latest jewellery designs. To me designing is often about the contrast in colours, styles, mixing contemporary with the classic, the wild with the stylish or the simplicity with daring. I also find a lot of inspiration from my travels and from the people I meet. Sometimes also just being on my own, going to an exciting place for a few days, giving myself the luxury to be inspired and use this peace and inspiration in my designs – and always with my little sketchbook by my side. It could also be a trip with my husband and children, in a nice hotel with atmosphere, close to the water – and at the same time being able to visit exciting museums or different places.
What time during the day are you the most creative? There is not a particular moment that I am most inspired in. It is very casual and unplanned. Which is why I always have my notebook with me so that I can draw or sketch whenever inspiration hits me.
Tell us the history about the snake collection. The snake collection is designed by my father. He has always been inspired by his travels around the world. And when he. as a very young boy visited Egypt, he was inspired to design the first snake ring, one that he then redesigned in a full collection for our 50th anniversary 2 years ago.
How to you like to wear your jewellery? I like to mix and match and most importantly play with the jewellery and wear the same jewellery in different ways.
What is style for you? I do not have one style - sometimes I dress very romantic, other times I like to wear high heels and suits, and other times, I choose a look that is more bohemian. I think that is why our collections are so extensive, women are different and have different moods, different stages of life, which is reflected in my collections. My father has his distinctive style, but he always designs his designs to fit my mother.
What kind of women do you see in Ole Lynggaard jewellery? We have a passion for making women all over the world feel beautiful and special. Our jewellery is designed for the self-confident woman, who appreciates quality, uniqueness and the beautiful things in life. She is not afraid of standing out and jewellery is something very personal to her and a way of expression. Every time I see a stylish charismatic woman wear my designs, it fills me with warmth. Our Crown Princess Mary is a great ambassador for Danish design and fashion. I get very proud every time I see her wear OLE LYNGGAARD COPENHAGEN jewellery because she wears it so beautifully.
Do you sleep with your jewellery on? No, I never sleep with my Jewellery.
Whats always on your desk? I always have artbooks, painting brushed, pens, different gemstones and my sketchbook
What do you hide? I don’t have a computer on my desk, as they are just not nice
Where do you go if you need a break from the office. I take a walk in the Danish nature to rewind, find peace and get inspired.
How many hours a day are you online? I am not much online. Of course I have my phone, and my Instagram, but I cherish the creative processes in painting, finding old fabrics etc.
Where in Copenhagen do you go for a coffee? Atelier September is like stepping into a little café in Paris. Decorated with long French tables and mirrors it is a very inspiring and cosy place. You always meet someone you know here! Their rye and avocado sandwich is great for lunch and they also have a good selection of healthy juices and lemonades. As simple as it is delicious!
Where do you eat your dinner? Restaurant Pluto: Being in Pluto feels like being in a New York bistro - even though the food is mainly French the energy, the pace and the people really give Pluto that big city atmosphere. At Pluto you will find larger groups of friends dining before a night out in the town as well as couples on a date. The ambient is very laid back and the food is indeed very good. The service is great and the staff is very flexible and will do their utmost to find you a seat in the bar if you come spontaneously without a reservation. I can strongly recommend their cod and their wine selection is excellent. The first time I was there was for a birthday dinner, we were a large group of friends and had the best time there - the birthday dinner developed into a party itself, due to the great energy and mood
Where do you do your shopping? Holly Golightly. Here you can get everything you dream of- a great selection of international high end brands. They are both an accessory store and a clothes shop – and especially the accessory shop is beautiful.
Where do you travel next? You never know – we are always up for new adventures, but it will definitely be with my family.
What trends do you believe in for the next year? I don’t design by trends. I follow women and what I fell like, so it can depend on the weather or my mood. The same women can wear small jewellery or big pieces depending on style or mood. The trend now is never important for me, it is designing jewellery that lasts forever and can be shared by generations that I strive in, when designing my jewellery.
Can you tell us about your spring summer 2016 collection?That is still a secret, but for the fall, we are extending our Silver Forest collection. It’s a silver collection aimed at the younger target. So I am really excited to see this in the stores in october.
